BACKGROUND POSITION INFORMATION

Position Title: Web Developer I
Location: MNGi, Denver Department: Web Development / Operations

Normal Work Schedule

9:00 – 6:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Some overtime and weekends may be required. Provide after hour 24 X 7 support based on a rotating schedule.

ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

The Web Developer I position is focused on implementing new products and websites on the online publishing system in addition to manipulating article and classified processing scripts. This includes providing in-depth training on the publishing system, as well as assisting as Tier 2 support during business hours and after-hours.

PRINCIPAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in the implementation and / or redesign of web sites on the online publishing system adhering strictly to project deadlines

• Participate in SCRUM agile development process as it relates to the online publishing system or other supported applications

• Develops internal tools for both newspaper and internal teams

• Adheres to the coding standards and style guides

• Assist in creating and enhancing article and classified processing scripts

• Help evaluate ‘pilot’ projects, including documentation and training for future implementations

• Identify needs for system monitoring and alerting based on system performance and assist in implementation of monitors
• Assist in implementation of new releases of functionality on the publishing system including drafting release notes, both customer based and internal training, and create implementation documentation

• Creates detailed help documentation for various functions within developed applications

• Reviews the documentation and training materials for technical accuracy and completeness

• Performs one-on-one / web based training with customers.

• Works closely with the newspapers as a “partner” in making their operations a success

• Identify and raise issues that affect product quality and work to resolve the issues

• Work closely with development, system administrators, and database teams to resolve performance or system related issues

• Assists the project manager and operations manager with various tasks as directed

• Provide Tier 2 support for the online publishing system as well as other integrated applications

• Works with outside vendors in support of third party applications

• Must be able to troubleshoot and make independent problem solving decisions

• Must be able to work closely with customers in difficult situations and make decisions to resolve problems

OTHER POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

This position spends 10% of a normal workweek coordinating projects.
This position spends 10% of a normal workweek performing technical analyses and writing documentation.
This position spends 20% of normal workweek training and developing other Associates.
This position spends 60% of a normal workweek in production or maintenance-related activities.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following:
• No travel required

• While performing the duties of this job, the associate is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light weights of up to 10 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
• Occasional moderate job stress due to deadlines, downtime and number of escalated issues from off-site locations.

• Must be able to attend the work location during normal business hours and be on-site to engage in personal interaction with others and as part of a team.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
• Regularly interacts with Development team, System Administrators, Quality Assurance and MIS team. Frequently works with Scrum Masters / project managers to inform them of project status. Also works directly with field interactive employees that are off-site in our newspaper properties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

The minimum education preferred to be considered for this position is:
• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems or a computer technology related field plus 1-2 years experience or the combination of education and/or experience that enables performance in all aspects of the position.

Specialized or technical knowledge, credentials or licensing required for the position include:
• Intermediate to advanced experience with HTML / Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

• Intermediate experience with JavaScript (JavaScript libraries such as JQuery, Ajax are preferred but not required)

• Some programming experience desired (Java, ASP.NET)

• Familiarity with relational database design and experience writing SQL queries (SQL Server, DB2)

• Ability to read, understand, and apply documentation on third party integration of products into publishing system

• Adheres to project plans, ensuring that timelines are met with expected results

• Forward thinking; an eye towards integrating new technologies and refining processes

• Clear understanding of scope control as it relates to web development.
